Jeep CJ7 EFI Conversion
Here is a step by step presentation of a conversion we did on a 1983 Jeep CJ7
which had a 2 bbl Carb system which was very inefficient .
The Vehicle needed an engine overhaul due to a broken piston ring on #1 cylinder.
This vehicle was burning oil and smoking after a trip from California to Colorado and back.
It also had over 150k miles on it and was getting tired
We weighed our options whether to buy a new Jeep or rebuild this one
at considerbly less than a new Jeep. We opted for the Overhaul and Conversion
Below is an image of what it looked like originally under the hood with its
2 bbl carburated 4.2 liter power plant in this 1983 CJ 7.
The first things we did are as follows :
Drained the engine oil and coolant,
unbolted the bell housing from the engine,
removed the clutch linkage, disconnected the exhaust system
related wiring , hose's and engine mounts necessary to remove the engine assembly.
We also removed the radiator and front core support
as shown below to make the engine removal as easy as possible.
OK ! we got the worn out engine out of it's resting place.
Here is Jeanette, the Owner of the Jeep. She is a kick !
She loved this project and help out through out the whole process.
The next thing we did was to disassemble the engine
to look and see is if we did in fact diagnose the broken rings in # 1 cylinder was correct.
Well we were correct ! We removed the cylinder head,
saw allot of carbon and oil deposits on # 1 Cylinders valves and combustion chamber,
removed the piston and rod from number 1 cylinder
the rings fell out into our hands as the piston came out of the bore.
So we decided to have a very reputable automotive machine shop in
San Luis Obispo Calif called POWER PERFORMANCE (Alternative Performance)
do the engine overhaul.
Harry Wouters does one of the best jobs I have seen for engine and cylinder head repairs around. His warrantee matches that of most factory replacement engines and far exceeds in excellence, durability and reliability !
Below is a picture of the finished original Long Block engine
which we recieved back from Harry and the Guys at Power Performance
